Production Classes

Small Factory Levels Curriculum

To complete the levels program at Small Factory Productions, students must complete 72 credits.

Entry Level Production Assistant (Level 1)
Director (Level 2 – must complete 26 credits as PA)
Producer (Level 3 – must complete 26 credits as Director)
Executive Producer (Level 4 – Must complete 20 credits as Producer)

  • All classes are 6 credits.
  • All workshops are 2 credits.

Our Levels Program is designed to guide and enhance teaching. Students may take classes without enrolling in our Levels Program.

Level 1: Production Assistant (26 Credits)

Students enrolling as a Production Assistant will focus heavily on the fundamentals of using their imagination, developing characters, and creating a story. Technology and software as a means of fostering creativity will be explored. Students will be asked to complete 26 credits, 4 classes and 1 workshop or 5 classes total. 1 Elective can be used.

Create-A-Cartoon

Our most popular class! Create-A-Cartoon is an amazing way to let your child’s imagination soar while introducing them to creative writing, art, music, and acting. Young producers work together to dream up an original story that will be turned into a 2-3 minute mini cartoon movie. They journey through the production process while developing characters, backgrounds, props, scripts and music. The class concludes with a red carpet premiere of their cartoon movie!

Animation 101

Students will explore the basics of animation production. The basic techniques of setting up a character, using frames, tweening and onionskin will be learned. The final product will be a basic animation created entirely by the student.

Creative Storytelling/Acting

Join us on a journey of imagination and performance. We will explore play writing, storytelling and acting, bringing them to performance through improvisational games and creative writing done “Small Factory Style”. We will build your child’s confidence and instill a love of performance.

Intro to Music Production

Credits: 6
Cost: $180

This beginner course will serve as the platform to any type of music production or music engineering work.  Students will learn the basics to creating music on a computer, first gaining an understanding of basic music theory concepts. Students will then use computer software to take a hands-on approach and piece prerecorded music tracks and instruments to create songs. No prior music education is required for this class.

Cartooning

Learn how to create and develop your own cartoons! This drawing intensive class takes a deeper look into character development, background design, perspective and movement drawing. Budding cartoonists will develop a cast of characters and/or their own comic strip.

Stopmotion

Students will work together to design, direct and produce their own stop motion animation movies. Students learn the basics of using a video camera as well as animation and movie-making. A variety of materials such as clay, lego’s, toys, and found objects are available to inspire creativity and produce magic! The class concludes with a red carpet premiere of their cartoon movie!

Video Game 101

Credits: 6

In this class we learn the basics/fundamentals of Game Making. Starting out with a brick breaker style game, kids learn how to create sprites and objects. Then they code those objects to bring the game to life. Once we have the basics down they evolve their game with power ups and multiple levels of increasing difficulty. We then take what we learned with our first game and apply it to a platform style game (ex: super mario bros.), where kids create characters that can jump, fall using gravity, and attack. They create collectable items and enemies that they will have to defeat and can make expansive levels with the use of side scrolling.

Put on a Show

During this 2 session 10 week program actors will create, act, sing, and even dance a little while bringing the chosen childhood classic to life! Students will also participate in the creation of costumes and props. The class will end with a production on stage!

Level 2: Director (26 Credits)

Students start honing the technical skills of using media as a form of expression. Software and technology are now the paint and canvas pushing the children’s imaginations further. One class will feed the next. Animated characters will inspire video games, video games will inspire music, and student’s will start seeing the connection between all art forms. By using the skills learned in Animation 101 students will apply their knowledge and learn new software in which to animate 2D. Students will create characters, backgrounds and record their voices. They will learn how to create layers, use vector art, and make symbols to show movement. The final product will be an original short story created entirely by the student.

Graphic Design 101

Credits: 6

In Graphic Design 101 students will learn how to use programs such as Illustrator and Photoshop. These programs are at the core of the Adobe Suite package and some of the most useful for producing media. The student will create high quality illustrations, logos, and other custom artwork. They will also learn how to enhance and digitally photos. Students will receive a copy of their work at the end of the class.

Improv

Learn how to think on your feet and have loads of fun while you are doing it! Students learn how to build their confidence, create characters, tell crazy stories and learn to laugh with their friends and at themselves through improvisational games and scene work. This class develops creativity, concentration and self-expression. Come in and join the fun!

Video Game 201

Pre Requisite: Video game 101

Expanding on Video game 101 kids make a dungeon style RPG based game. We take our sprites further giving them animation and a sense of 3 dimensionality. Kids create multiple rooms that the character can go through with increasing difficulty resulting in a final boss you have to defeat to win their game. Along the way kids create collectable items, locked doors that require a special action to unlock, and enemies that are out to get you. We work together to try and bring as much of the kids imagination into the game.

Basic Tracking Recording

Credits: 6

Pre Requisite: Intro to Music

Students will take the next step in audio production with this basic recording class. Students will learn how to run a professional recording session by working with state of the art software. Students will learn how to engineer their own session by setting up microphones, amplifiers, and audio interfaces. Voices, instruments, and sound effects will be recorded on multi-track recording software.

Video Production 101

Credits: 6

Designed as an introduction to the filmmaking, this course will give students a basic understanding of how to capture and download video into an editing software program. Students will be responsible for shooting their own video. A basic understanding of storyboarding will be discussed during the first couple classes but ultimately this class’s focus is on the technical. Each student will complete one short film.

Workshops

Lighting for Film, Intro Pixelation

Level 3: Producer (20 Credits)

Students are now beginning to understand the subtleties of art and technology and they learn the specialized techniques that actual professionals use today. Students will start thinking as professionals figuring out which media will best tell their stories and fulfill their imagination. A focus on either, music, video or animation will be apparent but a healthy respect and understanding of all the disciplines will be gained. A college portfolio is starting to take shape. (Pick 3 Classes and 1 Workshop or 4 Classes)

This level is for the advanced animator. Students will perfect their 2D styles and create new characters and animations. Students will not only know how to technically create animations but they’ll also focus on character and story development. Students will be able to take home a CD copy of their creation.

Script Writing

The quintessential character dominates great stories, myths and legends. This class has been designed for those creative individuals who have great ideas for cartoons or films but don’t know how to formally begin. Students will develop characters, hone their skills for dialogue and unlock the power of their work. Characters will become more intriguing and the basic principles involved with script writing will be learned. This class is ideal for anyone who has a story to tell.

As a culmination to the previous levels, this class setting will allow students to apply their knowledge mainly in post-production audio work. Students will learn how to properly edit and mix their recorded tracks together, creating a master copy to be digitally exported for a final recording.

Video Production 201

Using the basic knowledge used in the 101 course Students will create an original film from start to finish. Directing for the camera will be a focus as well as character and story development. Workshops

Making Apps, Pixelation, Creating Intro’s for Cartoons and Films

Level 4: Executive Producer

The Executive Producer level is the final and most prestigious level Small Factory Offers. It’s the black belt of the karate world. At this point students think like professionals. They understand how to use all major software and more importantly they know how to tell a story. By now they have realized their focus and have made many pieces of work within the media. They will be able to pick their best pieces for their college portfolio.
